Common Name: Royal Purple

Latin Name: Cotinus Coggygria

Located Cotinus Coggygria height: 4-5m

Leaf Shape: Large purple obovate leaves turning red in Autumn

Bark: Light brown in colour. Stems smooth, red/purple in colour.

Preferred soil type: Well drained chalk, clay, sand or loam.

Fruit/Flowers: Small flowers loosely branched/clustered in a deep plum colour. Appear in summer.

I located this specie alongside an irregular-stone flagged pathway. Its bold structure and mass of red/pink tones created a dense and characteristic, picturesque value. Its condition was of a good standard with no visual signs of disease or mistreatment. The planting bed which it was situated within was mainly occupied by the Cotinus Coggygria, indicating that this plant had dominated the soils nutrients. Its location also allows plenty of exposure for sunlight.  The planting of this specie will have been intentional to provide a colourful character for the space as previously mentioned, and to act as a focal point to the area minimising views over the fenced space adjacent.
